Membership information

DO I HAVE TO SPEAK FRENCH TO JOIN THE PROGRAM?
Absolutely not! Many of our members do not speak French at all, or very little, while some are fluent. All that is needed is a desire to communicate, online aids such as Google Translate, and language barriers tumble down.
WHO CAN JOIN THE PROGRAM?
Anybody. Our members range from high school and college students to retirees and include teachers, business professionals, grandparents, retired and active-duty military, civil servants, emergency responders, attorneys, a county commissioner, and even a church organist. Some of our members don't even live in Crestview or Okaloosa County, but are friends of residents.
WHERE DO I STAY IF I GO TO NOIRMOUTIER?
We always stay with a host family when we visit, never in a hotel. Our hosts prepare meals for us and transport us to group events and activities, and embrace us in their daily lives, providing a full cultural immersion into Noirmoutrin home life.
WHAT’S THE COST TO VISIT FRANCE?
Costs vary per person, but figure on about $2,500. We each organize our own travel. Experienced members will gladly help newcomers make their arrangements. We book our own airfare and transportation to Nantes, where our friends greet us and take us to the island.  After that, there is minimal expense. Costs to consider include airfare, train tickets to and from Nantes, personal expenses (souvenirs, treating your hosts to dinner, etc.), and any optional excursions, such as overnight trips our hosts may organize. Previous trips have included the Normandy D-Day beaches and Mont Saint Michel.  Also, many participants take advantage of the opportunity to take independent trips elsewhere in France and Europe before and/or after the stay in Noirmoutier.

WHY DON'T YOU DO ORGANIZE GROUP FARES?

Because everyone sets their own itinerary, we travel on different schedules, some arriving before or after others, and staying for further adventures after the "official" Sister City events. Group fares do not allow this flexibility and opportunity for extended travel.
MUST SOMEONE STAY IN MY HOME?
Hosting our friends from Noirmoutier in our homes when they visit Crestview is an integral part of the program. However, this is not always convenient for some families or individual members, so it is not a condition for participating.
